This project was conceived with pine construction in mind. However you could substitute that with redwood or cedar. I like the rustic style of this table. I also like the functionality of having the second surface below the tabletop, to put more stuff. The thick legs makes for a really stable, functional console table. If you are going to be leaving your table outdoors, finish with paint or a weather proofing stain or sealant. I know paint is the least attractive option, but it does give the most protection.
