The F-104 is a single-engine, supersonic interceptor aircraft that was extensively deployed as a fighter-bomber during the Cold War by NATO countries.
Before the Korean war the trend was to build ever more complex and expensive aircraft. After the war however they needed a simple, lightweight aircraft with maximum altitude and climb performance. The F-104 was designed by Lockheed to fill this role.
